Oradour sur Glane the 'Village of the Martyrs' is nearby. It stands as a memorial, exactly as it was left by its community that were tragically slaughtered. Over 70 years ago, on 10 June 1944, the village of Oradour-sur-Glane in Haute-Vienne in Nazi-occupied France was destroyed, when 642 of its inhabitants, including women and children, were massacred by a German Waffen-SS company. The site itself and its museum are well worth a visit.
Situated about 25 kilometres to the north of Limoges, the Lake
of Saint-Pardoux is one of the most visited destinations in the Haute-Vienne
department of Limousin. Last year saw its new Aqua Centre open, sensitively
designed to make the most of its setting by the lake and a popular choice for
families.
The
lake is substantial in size, with a surface area covering more than 300
hectares (750 acres), and offers a wide range of facilities and activities to
summer visitors including a restaurant and cafes, play areas and water sports.
Limoges is the capital of the Haute Vienne. It is an authentic, traditional French but current city with 2,000 years of history. Its heritage is rich and varied and makes for different places to visit, atmospheric streets to wander through and places to eat. Limoges has an impressive Cathedral that sits by formal gardens and overlooks the River Vienne and valley, all ideal for relaxing and enjoying the scenery.
